At Newmarket Family Doctors all consultations are by appointment only. It is extremely helpful for our staff and doctors if our patients are familiar with our Appointment system so please read this page to get a better idea of how our practice works.
We also use an online booking system where you can book at any time that is convenient with you.
This is great if you have been up late with a sick child and wish to sleep in with the knowledge that you have an appointment waiting for you.
Some of our doctors can book out many days in advance but please remember that there are always appointments held for the day and for phone bookings only so please phone us on 3356 3435 if you cannot get an online appointment for the doctor, day and time that you are seeking. We also get a lot of cancellations so it is worth calling us even if we are booked out.

On the day of your appointment you will receive an SMS message reminding you of your appointment. It helps us greatly if you are able to contact us to confirm your appointment for the day.
We can get extremely busy, so if you cannot keep an appointment, please call and advise reception as soon as possible, so we can give it to someone else.
Online Booking System
With the online booking form above, you can select a particular doctor and a time and book in real time online.
You can also cancel an appointment that you have made online. However, you cannot cancel an appointment by this online system that was made in person or by phone. You will still need to call us for those appointments to be cancelled.
Please call us if you cannot get an online appointment for the day that wish as we hold appointments for emergencies and for phone callers.
It also is worth calling ahead if you only need a short appointment which we can squeeze in. Please read below for more information. It is also preferable to call ahead if you are going travelling as we can obtain uptodate health information for your travel destination before you arrive.
To suit our patients' differing requirements, we offer 4 levels of appointment times.
- Standard Appointment 15 minutes
- Long Appointment 30 minutes
- Prolonged Appointment 45 minutes
- 1 Hour Appointment 60 minutes
To help you decide whether you need a long appointment, there is further information on our longer appointment types listed below.
In addition to the different consultation times, it helps us if you can give our reception staff an idea of what you are coming in for as some consultation problems may require special considerations.
Examples include travel vaccinations, children's vaccinations, papsmears, mental health care plans, simple repeat prescriptions or referrals, workcover, commercial vehicle licences, implanon procedures, and surgical procedures.
We do encourage you to make a longer appointment if you have multiple or complex problems as this helps us manage our appointments better and also helps our doctors give your health issues the attention they deserve without being rushed.
Occasionally if you have multiple problems that cannot be managed in the allotted time, your doctor may ask you to make another appointment.
Common long appointments are as follows. If you are unsure as to whether you need a long 30 minute or 45 minute appointment, please ask our reception staff. Please see our Fees Section for the longer appointment fees.

If you require something simple like a follow up prescription or follow up referral and there is no other medical attention or problems needing to be looked at, then please inform the reception staff of this.
We often have sick people who cannot get an appointment, so it can be frustrating to fill an entire appointment slot for simple administration issues.
Our doctors all have different ways of accommodating these shorter appointments, but if we know that you have a very quick problem to deal with it does help us greatly to manage our day better.
These short appointments must be booked ahead of time. If you have any medical concerns, you will need to book a standard appointment.
When you Arrive
When you arrive, please ensure that you lodge your name at the front desk so that we can arrive you into our computer system.
Please inform us if you think you are contagious as we may choose to seat you away from other patients.
Additionally please inform us if you arrive and are suffering from an emergency situation such as chest pain or shortness of breath or an allergy reaction.
Accidents and Emergencies
PLEASE ADVISE RECEPTION STAFF ON THE PHONE IF YOU FEEL THAT YOUR PROBLEM IS AN EMERGENCY.
We make every effort to try and look after our patients in an emergency, and occasionally this can include calling an ambulance to you if needed.
Common life threatening emergencies include chest pain, sudden shortness of breath, loss of consciousness, and allergic reactions. In these situations, it is always advisable to call an ambulance by dialing 000, as you are most likely to require hospital attention.
In some semi-urgent cases we can try and fit you into a doctor, so it is always a good idea to inform the reception staff if you feel that you need an urgent appointment.
At Newmarket Family Doctors we understand that a sick child can cause terrible angst and worry for parents and we make every effort to squeeze in a sick child if possible even when we are booked out.
Often times simple problems like ear infections or rashes that are quick consultations can be fitted in between patients but it is very important for you to inform our staff as to the nature of the problem so that our doctors can fit you in appropriately.
If we don't know about the problem, then we can't triage it properly.
What if we are Booked Out?
It is an unfortunate and well recognised fact that the more popular a medical centre is, the more busy it will get, and this can cause frustration for patients and doctors alike when there are no available appointments.
If we are booked out please feel free to leave your name and contact details on our Cancellation List. We often have people calling to cancel and if an appointment becomes available, we will contact you to offer you the appointment.
Additionally sometimes doctors will run ahead of time and may be able to squeeze you in for a fit in appointment.
These cancellation and fit in appointments are given out in order of urgency so it is very important for you to inform our staff as to the nature of your problem so we can fit you in appropriately. If we don't know how urgent your problem is, then we aren't able to ascertain whether we can fit you in.
These fit in appointments can make a doctor run late, so we ask that you respect the doctor and other patients with this service and only use this service for problems that cannot be booked for another time.
Other Appointment Tips
Hate waiting? We know it happens, and doctors hate to keep you waiting too. But unfortunately emergencies can occur which can cause the doctor to fall behind. We thank you in your understanding of this and we suggest that it is a good principle to prepare for delays as our days can be very unpredictable.
The reception staff will try and inform you if there are any delays. If we are delayed, please feel free to leave a mobile number at reception if you wish to browse around the shopping centre and we can call you back in when the doctor becomes available. It can also pay to phone us ahead of time to see if the doctor is running on time.
If you are short on time, the best appointments are first thing in the morning and just after lunch, as it is unlikely any delays would have built up.
Winter is certainly our busiest months and summer and school holidays are our quietest times. We do encourage you to book non-urgent appointments such as routine health checks for the quieter months.
On Saturday mornings we only have one or two doctors on and our doctors share a Saturday morning roster rotating roughly every 8 weeks. We do not have a nurse working on Saturdays so we cannot do any procedural work.
