Dr Brigitta Sofield

Dr Brigitta Sofield graduated from The University of Melbourne in 1989. She became a Fellow of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners in 1994.

Brigitta has practiced medicine in metropolitan and regional areas of Victoria, the Northern Territory and South-East Queensland. This has provided her with a wide-range of life and medical experiences. She has worked in Newmarket since 2010 and lives locally.

She enjoys working together with her patients to assist them in achieving their best health outcomes. Brigitta values providing ongoing holistic health care to individuals and families.

As well as enjoying the variety of general practice, Brigitta’s interests include:

 women’s health with special interest in menopause and antenatal care
 mental health
 paediatrics
 men’s health
 chronic disease management, and
 preventative medicine.

Brigitta is a member of the Australian Menopause Society (AMS). This is a group of doctors and other health care professionals who have a special interest in mid-life, menopause and the promotion of healthy ageing in women.

AMS and their members aim to bring accurate evidence-based information to their patients. Brigitta attends the Annual AMS Congress to be informed of the latest developments in this area of medicine.

Menopause is an excellent time for all women to assess and reduce their risk of cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, bowel, breast and cervical cancer and mental health. Addressing these issues at mid-life can help women achieve active independent lives into their later years.

For some women the hormonal changes at perimenopause and menopause can be distressing. There are hormonal and non-hormonal treatments available to assist women through these changes.

Brigitta is an aligned antenatal share-care provider with Royal Brisbane Women’s Hospital and Mater Mother’s Hospital and likes to assist mother’s to-be in their special journey to motherhood.

Brigitta endeavours to provide a safe environment for patients to address their mental health care concerns. She provides mental health assessment, life style advice, prescribes medication if required, refers to psychologist and /or psychiatrist if required. She is registered with Medicare to provide general practice focused psychological strategies to patients.

Multiple health concerns, chronic health conditions, menopause and mental health consultations require more time. Accordingly, Dr Sofield advises that for these consultations long appointments and review appointments are necessary.

Dr Brigitta Sofield values her existing patients and also welcomes new patients. Brigitta has one teenage daughter and outside of medicine likes spending time and caring for her family and friends. She also enjoys music, learning, cooking, travel, low impact aerobics and bushwalking.
